A Solid Foundation

Most Worshipful Raymond C. Dunn wrote in the 1929 Proceedings, "It is true that Oxford Orphanage has, within the past several years, received a few devises and bequests of property, but these have been made, to a large extent, without suggestion or effort on the part of the Masons, and even in these instances it is highly probable the gift would have been larger had there been such suggestion or effort."

Most Worshipful Dunn, a noted attorney, born in Scotland Neck in 1882, wanted to establish a way whereby gifts could be made by Masons by annual gifts, wills and or planned deferred gifts to a Masonic Endowment whose sole purpose was to accumulate assets for charity. Its major design would be for the annual assistance of Oxford Orphanage (now The Masonic Home for Children) and The Masonic and Eastern Star Home in Greensboro or any charity established by the Grand Lodge of North Carolina. MW Dunn prepared a resolution and presented it to the Grand Lodge on January 16, 1929.

Estate Planning

The Foundation seeks it sustenance from the Masons of North Carolina. It is the one true Masonic Endowment for North Carolina. At present, 384 lodges with members totaling over 60,000 strong, support the North Carolina Masonic Foundation. This support comes by way of annual gifts, deferred gifts and legacies.

Finances

As an endowment it is a source of assistance to the annual incomes of The Masonic Home for Children and The Masonic and Eastern Star Home. Every dollar that is presented, received and receipted into the Foundation adds to the principal and is endowed in perpetuity.

The asset fund balance in the Foundation is over $17,000,000. These assets are invested and reinvested and the interest and dividends born off the corpus is used to assist in the annual operations of the two Masonic Homes in North Carolina.

The Future

First, let’s have an understanding of terms:

Annual Giving from the Lodges: The goal of the annual giving effort is to provide opportunities, through our lodges, for Masons to give a gift to support children and elder adults. Its main focus and emphasis is to enhance charitable giving to the Masonic Home for Children and the Masonic and Eastern Star Home. Additionally, there may be lodges that wish to contribute to the North Carolina Masonic Foundation and that is totally appropriate; and furthermore, any lodge may designated their gifts accordingly to any of the three charities. But fundamentally, the Annual Giving solicitation is aimed at assisting the annual operations at the Oxford and Greensboro HOMES.

Deferred Giving or Planned Gifts/Legacies: Here is the opportunity to truly grow our endowments--the principal assets held in perpetuity by the individual foundation: i.e. the North Carolina Masonic Foundation, Inc.; the Masonic Home for Children at Oxford, Inc. and the Masonic and Eastern Star Home, Inc. Our eminent planned future with these charities will be determined, and rests, on how we fund these endowments, invest the monies for income purposes to the charities, and grow the charities with future plans; thus, accomplishing planned gift endeavors in such a fashion that we are "judged not on our efforts but on victories," as John J. Robinson so apply wrote.

Deferred Gifts or Planned Gifts are generally accomplished by one-on-one visitations with a brother or sister who wish to arrange a gift now or sometime in the future. Deferred Gifts are generally not accomplished by annual solicitations; they are engendered through an ongoing process that generally becomes better with a formal Development Program in place. Deferred Gifts may be designated to any of the Masonic charities, and more importantly, always heeding and respecting the expressed wishes and desires of the contributor.

Capital Campaigns: Are major solicitation campaigns focusing on funding assets that generally require large amounts of money to underwrite; i.e. a new Care Center in Greensboro is an excellent example. Typically, these campaigns are one time efforts, which may be solicited over a period of time in order to accomplish a defined goal.

Annual Giving from the Lodges:

Let's expand on the Annual Fund for our charities. The Annual Fund is the life blood for the operations of our two Homes. Presently, the Homes readily depend on the gifts coming in on a regular basis to support their annual operations. Without the Annual Fund both Homes would suffer a great loss in legacy-gift assets, owing to the fact of having to use legacy gifts to support there annual operations.

First and foremost, in any non-profit, charitable organization, the Annual Fund is the keystone of the program. The Annual Fund is the life's blood for without it, the organization, our charities, could not survive.

So, the Annual Fund must accomplish the task of shoring up the annual operations revenues that come to our charities. First and foremost, it keeps that mark of excellence out before all true Masons and assist them in the fulfillment of their obligations to contribute to distressed worthy Master Masons, their widows and orphans--in this case, the children that come to the Masonic Home for Children at Oxford in a distressed life situation, seeking assistance and a guiding hand by a "Master" craftsman.

Deferred Giving or Planned Gifts/Legacies:

Second, Deferred or Planned Giving is that element of the organization that builds the endowments of the charities. It formally accepts the legacy gifts, bequeathed by way of wills and planned gifts to the charity. A formal Deferred or Planned Giving program comes after the Annual Fund. The aim of a Deferred Giving program is to endow the charity/charities in such a fashion that they will be self-sustaining in a prescribed amount of time.

Capital Campaigns:

Third, there are occasions where the charities need new physical plants, new structures, improvements and refurbishment. These are usually major financial objectives in accomplishing. They usually require large dollars and require extraordinary effort. A good example, is a new Care Center. These endeavors of capital campaign improvements are after the Annual Fund is in place, along with a Deferred Giving program. And, should not take away from the monies coming in to the Annual Fund. In some instances, major gifts are received for a capital campaign for the use of the effort--usually Deferred Gifts are directed to the Deferred Giving program as they are better served there. Capital Campaigns generally need there funds now for use in the immediate outlook of the plan and scheme of things.

In Summary

The mission of the North Carolina Masonic Foundation and the Development Programs & Activities are to offer a communication link from the charities to the membership in their respective areas; educate and instruct on the general operations and well-being of the North Carolina Masonic Charities; to assimilate a better understanding of Brotherly Love and Relief and the necessity for helping the young and old who need assistance; and to motivate constituent lodges and members in philanthropic endeavors through annual giving, planned and deferred gifts designated for the Masonic Home for Children, The Masonic and Eastern Star Home and the North Carolina Masonic Foundation.
